Vice-President's Wisdom
In nuce: Run meetings and ritual without wasting people's time
Running House Meetings
Your job in running meetings is to make sure people’s time isn’t wasted.
Attendance
- Generally, absences for unavoidable conflicts are excused (it’s in the by-laws, but those rules are a little strict — be reasonable but not too reasonable).
- Figure out a policy for lateness — if it’s egregious and unexcused then it is probably bad.
Start meetings on time
- Some brothers will show up late, but if you wait for everyone to show up, meetings drag on far longer than they need to
- If you start meetings late, then brothers will show up even later because they know it will be a waste of time to show up on time, which exacerbates the problem
Start with roses and thorns
- When else are we going to hear about all the brothers’ relationship updates?
- It’s really the only time we get to hear how everyone is doing. It’s also great to have an opportunity to share exciting announcements
During officer reports, try to limit announcements to stuff that directly affects the entire house
